STELCO has facilitated employment opportunities for 30 individuals with disabilities.
STELCO announced that these job opportunities were arranged as part of the government's initiative, in line with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's pledge, to ensure employment within state entities for all individuals with disabilities who wish to work.
At a ceremony held today at STELCO for this purpose, the letters of appointment were handed over by the First Lady, Madam Sajida Mohamed. In addition to the First Lady, the Minister of Social and Family Development, Dr. Aishath Shiham, and senior officials from STELCO also participated in the ceremony.
During the ceremony, Madam Sajida stated that providing employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities brings numerous benefits and advantages to the employees' families and the nation. In her address, she highlighted that integrating individuals with disabilities into the workforce leads to improvements in health, daily routines, and financial independence.
"Gaining new friends in the workplace brings psychological comfort, and the praise and kind words from others will further boost self-confidence," Sajida noted.
Speaking at the event, STELCO's Managing Director, Ahmed Shamaah Rasheed, affirmed that STELCO has always taken the lead in such initiatives.
"Currently, over 50 employees with various types of disabilities are working in this company. It is certainly a pleasure for all of us to see these individuals actively participating as important members of society, rather than being marginalized," Shamaah stated.
He further added that the employees who received job offers today will bring benefits to the community, develop their capabilities and skills further, and open opportunities for them to participate in national development.
"The work environment is an important platform for these employees to foster their self-confidence and expand their role in society. The 30 new employees joining STELCO were selected from 21 of the islands where STELCO provides utility services," Shamaah explained.
With these 30 new employees, the total number of STELCO employees with various disabilities now stands at 80. STELCO also mentioned that these employees are serving in both technical and non-technical fields.
