Former President of the Maldives and former President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Mohamed Nasheed, has stated that he will provide his full support to the MDP to win the upcoming council elections.
In a post on X today, congratulating Abdul Gafoor (Gapo), the interim Chairperson of the MDP and member for Hanimaadhoo constituency, Nasheed stated that he would offer his complete cooperation in all efforts required to maintain party unity and achieve success in the forthcoming local council elections.
Gapo was elected to the interim Chairperson position of the MDP with 65 votes out of 66 members who participated in the meeting. Following his election, Gapo also presided over the meeting.
At the National Council meeting held on the night of the 28th of last month, the first vote was called for the name of former Dhiddhoo constituency member Abdullah Waheed, who was nominated by former President Mohamed Nasheed's faction. However, questions arose regarding the results of the vote taken to determine whether Waheed, who had contested for the interim Chairperson position, should be elected or not, leading to a heated discussion and the eventual adjournment of the meeting.
The meeting became contentious when the secretariat announced that Waheed had received 47 votes, while 48 votes were required for his election to the position. However, the MDP later decided that Waheed had indeed received 48 votes and had been elected as the interim Chairperson.
Despite the MDP's decision that he was elected to the position, Waheed later decided to relinquish the post.
