President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that efforts are underway to systematically restructure the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), a move that will ultimately ensure the judiciary operates with genuine independence.
Speaking at a meeting with residents of Henveiru last night, the President reiterated his commitment to reforming the judiciary by altering the composition of the JSC as part of broader initiatives to ensure its independence.
"God willing, the judiciary will achieve true independence. As I have pledged, the composition of the Judicial Service Commission will be reformed in the near future. The necessary legal amendments to facilitate this change will also be presented. It is crucial that every matter is addressed in its appropriate and systematic order," the President stated.
The President further affirmed that he is unequivocally opposed to actions driven by a spirit of vengeance or political maneuvering that could lead to injustices. He emphasized that he would not exert any undue influence over the realm of justice.
The President added that the public would now witness actions being taken on matters that were previously neglected due to fear. As an example, he highlighted the measures being implemented against individuals involved in drug-related offenses.
Currently, the Judicial Service Commission comprises ten members: the President and Vice President of the JSC, and eight other members. The President of the JSC is appointed by the People's Majlis, while the Vice President is appointed by the President of the Republic. The other members include the Speaker of the People's Majlis, a Supreme Court Justice (excluding the Chief Justice), a High Court Judge, a Lower Court Judge, the President of the Civil Service Commission, the Attorney General, a member from among legal professionals, and a member representing the general public.
