Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan has defended the government’s efforts to strengthen the Maldives Police Service, responding to criticism from former President Abdulla Yameen.
The exchange followed remarks made by Yameen during a People’s National Front (PNF) event, where he questioned the current administration’s ability to protect the police institution’s credibility. He argued that inadequate leadership in previous years had weakened public trust in the force.
In response, Minister Ihusaan stated that the police service is on track to become a highly trusted and credible institution by the end of the government’s five-year term. He noted that most officers are committed to serving the nation, and highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at improving internal processes and raising standards.
Ihusaan affirmed his confidence in the police force’s future and reiterated that the ministry is working to address remaining challenges to strengthen public trust in the institution.
