The People's Majlis has just approved the appointment of Ahmed Mahloof, the former Youth Minister in the previous MDP government, as the Maldivian Ambassador to Japan.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu submitted Mahloof's nomination for the position to the People's Majlis last Wednesday.
Upon reading President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's letter to the Majlis, requesting a decision on Mahloof's appointment as Ambassador to Japan, the Speaker of the Majlis, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, decided from the chair to refer the matter to the Majlis's Foreign Relations Committee for review.
Mahloof was subsequently summoned and interviewed by the Foreign Relations Committee.
The proposal to grant committee approval for Mahloof's appointment was put forward by Mohamed Dhawood, member for Kulhudhuffushi North constituency, and seconded by Ibrahim Hussain, member for Fuvahmulah South constituency.
The committee approved Mahloof's nomination unanimously, with 8 votes from the 9 members present at the meeting.
Following the committee's decision being sent to the Majlis floor, the Majlis approved Mahloof's appointment to the position during today's session, with a unanimous vote of 60 members from the 64 present at the session.
Prior to his appointment as Youth Minister in the MDP government, Mahloof served as a member of the People's Majlis representing the Galolhu South constituency.
After entering the political arena as a member of the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), founded by former President Maumoon during his administration, he was first elected to the 17th People's Majlis.
Subsequently, he was elected to the 18th Majlis as a member of the MDP.
Upon the conclusion of the MDP government, Mahloof left the party and formally joined the current ruling party, PNC, at a major event held by the party on the 17th of this month.
