The new Islamic Centre in Dhidhdhoo has been officially inaugurated, marking the completion of a major religious and community development project for the island.
The facility, which includes Masjid Shaheed Umar Ahmed, was opened by the Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr Mohamed Waheed, and former Islamic Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed.
Constructed by Rasheed Carpentry and Construction (RCC) at a cost of MVR 50 million, the Islamic Centre can accommodate up to 1,500 worshippers. The complex features a range of facilities, including an Islamic library, an outreach centre of the National Centre for the Holy Quran, a multipurpose hall, a seminar room, and an administrative office. An elevator has also been installed to ensure easier access for worshippers.
The mosque has been named in honour of Umar Ahmed, who was martyred during the November 3rd terrorist attack in Malé. At the time, he served as a guard at the Islamic Centre. He lost his life at the age of 45 while attempting to escape after being abducted by the attackers.
All facilities were completed before the official opening, marking an important milestone for Dhidhdhoo’s religious and community services.
