President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the government's taxi line service will commence in February next year with 150 cars.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the government to launch taxi services in the Malé area with Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) and the Ministry of Transport was signed on February 15, 2025.
The service was initially planned to start in early July this year. While its launch was later postponed to late August this year, it did not commence. Following this, at a ceremony held on the 17th of this month to mark two years since the government took office, the President announced that the service would begin in February next year.
Speaking at a meeting held last night at Aminiyya School to meet with the residents of Machangoalhi, the President stated that the government's launch of a taxi line service is not about taking over the business of taxi drivers, but rather the government aims to provide the best taxi service to the public.
"Currently, an announcement has been made for 400 drivers. We are bringing 150 e-cars. These 150 cars are being brought in. In January, February next year, all cars will be brought in, and we will start with 150 cars. This taxi service is being provided by MTCC," he said.
The President stated that in recruiting drivers for the taxi line service, priority would be given to those who are already driving taxis, and this service would provide solutions to many drivers' complaints.
"A complaint from many drivers is that they do not receive a steady income. Therefore, through this opportunity that has now been opened, under the established regulations, a steady monthly income will be received, and the weekly income that should be received will be provided," he stated.
The President further added that taxi drivers would have the opportunity to spend time with their families and lead a dignified life. He also noted that a very good service would be provided in high-quality, environment-friendly cars.
