Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has addressed public criticism following the disclosure of personal financial details of a woman who had received assistance from the Zakat Fund; apologising for it.

The issue arose when single mother raised concerns over Zakat support due to the movement of funds through her bank account during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s meeting with Vilingili community. The transactions were reportedly linked to public donations for her son’s medical travel and income from a new job secured four months ago.

Following this, Minister Dr Shaheem posted on Facebook stating that the woman had previously received financial aid from the Zakat Fund and outlined her earnings and account balance. The post led to widespread criticism over the sharing of her personal financial information, after which the Minister removed it.

Minister Dr Shaheem later clarified on X that the intention had been to explain how Zakat eligibility is assessed, not to expose personal details, and expressed regret if the information shared was inappropriate.

He emphasised that Zakat House operates according to Islamic principles and ensures fairness when assessing individuals for assistance. According to the Minister, those who meet the legal requirements are included in the Register of the Poor, and applicants are informed if they do not qualify based on the documents they submit.

The Ministry reiterated that Zakat House remains committed to protecting the dignity and rights of all Maldivian citizens who seek its support.
