President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that even as it approaches three centuries since the historic event that demonstrated Dhonbandaarain's wisdom, intelligence, and love for this nation, his memories are still vividly alive in this land with gratitude.
The President made these remarks in a post commemorating Huravee Day, which is celebrated today.
In his post, the President noted that today marks 281 years since the brave national jihad that saved the Maldives from the peril of the Malabaris, who set fire to many places in Male', took the reigning king hostage, inflicted countless inhumane tortures on Maldivians, and brought dark days of servitude upon the nation.
Huravee Day is observed to commemorate the day the Maldives was liberated from servitude after a Malabari army invaded the Maldives on the 13th of Safar, 1166 in the Hijri calendar.
It was Dhonbandaarain who liberated the Maldives from the servitude of the Malabaris. On the night of Sunday, 3rd Jumada al-Akhir 1166 (April 7, 1753), Dhonbandaarain and his companions entered Veyodhoshu Ganduvaru, which the Malabaris had made their center of power, fought against them, and defeated them.
The day is named Huravee Day because the national hero who led the jihad to liberate the Maldivian nation from the servitude of the Malabaris, Dhonbandaarain, was a member of the Huravee dynasty.
