President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated the first Urban Primary Healthcare Centre in the Malé region, located in Maafannu, as part of the Government’s commitment to strengthening the public health system.
The inauguration took place this evening at a special ceremony at the Maafannu facility, with the President joined by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed. The event also marked the official handover of the Centre, which was developed to expand access to healthcare services under the Malé City Group of Hospitals. The project was implemented by the Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO).
Abdul Razzaq Haleem, Chief Executive Officer of the Malé City Group of Hospitals, formally assumed charge of the Centre and expressed his gratitude to the President, highlighting that such facilities will significantly enhance public healthcare services.
The Urban Primary Healthcare Centre offers three core services: General Practitioner (GP) consultations, referrals to specialists for cases requiring advanced care, and the delivery of national public health programmes. Its Child Health Clinic will provide growth and development monitoring and routine vaccinations, while additional clinics will focus on promoting healthy habits, supporting mental well-being, and assisting individuals wishing to quit smoking.
Highlighting the Administration’s focus on preventive healthcare, the Government has announced plans to establish five more centres in the Malé region—three in Malé and two in Hulhumalé. Strengthening the health sector remains a priority, with the highest allocation planned in the 2026 budget.
Following the inauguration, the President and First Lady toured the Centre and met with staff. Senior officials from the Malé City Group of Hospitals, Government representatives, and healthcare providers also attended the ceremony.
