President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has described the completion of the K. Gulhi Land Reclamation Project as a key milestone that lays the groundwork for future development on the island.
He made the remarks at a ceremony held in the newly reclaimed area to mark the completion of the K. Gulhi Land Reclamation and Coastal Protection Project. The President commended the efforts of all parties involved and highlighted that the ongoing Land Use Plan would ensure the most effective allocation of land based on community needs. He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting Gulhi’s development, particularly in housing and other essential sectors.
As part of the ceremony, an agreement was signed between the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure and the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) for the development of the Gulhi Harbour. The President assured that the project would be implemented swiftly, similar to the reclamation works.
Responding to public concerns about land designated for tourism, President Dr Muizzu said that any decision would be made in line with residents’ preferences, within legal boundaries, and without placing a financial burden on the state.
The Gulhi Land Reclamation and Coastal Protection Project was carried out by MTCC over a period of 630 days, adding 10.15 hectares of land to the island. The project included a 940-metre revetment, a 362-metre geo bag revetment, and an 88-metre groyne.
To commemorate the occasion, Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib presented a plaque to the Gulhi Island Council.
The newly launched Gulhi Harbour Development Project is expected to be completed within 530 days and will include deepening the harbour and channel, repairing existing structures, and building a new concrete jetty.
