The Progressive National Congress (PNC) has decided to hold an event this Friday to celebrate the achievements of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's government over the past two years.
President Muizzu is scheduled to attend the event, which will be held by the ruling PNC at 8:30 PM this Friday.
Speaking about the event on Sangu TV's program "Dhiveheenge Raajje," Hoarafushi constituency member Ali Moosa said that one of the main purposes of the event is to celebrate President Muizzu's victory in the 2023 presidential election and to remind people of the conditions faced by Maldivian citizens during the previous MDP government.
"To clearly explain to the citizens where the country stands now. This is important because where was our country before? Where was the Maldivian nation when the MDP government took over, socially, economically, and from other angles? So we need to tell this to the Maldivian people. And we need to clarify what we have achieved in these two years, the two years spent under President Muizzu's administration," he said.
Member Ali Moosa said it is important to always inform and remind the Maldivian people of these matters, and that this is something PNC needs to do. He also stated that the success achieved by this government is a success for the Maldivian people.
"So explaining or reminding the Maldivian people of the successes achieved is truly one of the important things," he said.
President Muizzu has repeatedly highlighted that the biggest challenge faced when his government took office was the debt issue from the MDP government.
At a ceremony held last Thursday at Barcelo Nasandhura Male to award 206 development projects to private companies, the President said that when he took office, the country was designed by some to default. However, he said that this has been changed, and the country's economy is now on the right track.
Speaking at that ceremony, Finance Minister Moosa Zameer said that this government has paid more than one billion dollars in debt so far, and that the government has been running with a fiscal surplus during the first 40 weeks of this year. The Minister also said that after many years, the budget deficit for 2025 will be reduced to a single digit.
The Minister said that the previous government used the Sovereign Development Fund (SDF) to finance the budget deficit for unproductive expenditures, but this government has rebuilt the fund and changed it to be maintained in foreign currency. The Minister noted that the fund currently holds more than USD 100 million in cash.
