President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has emphasised that a strong and capable military is vital for the Maldives’ long-term economic growth and national security.
He made the remarks while inaugurating the new Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Air Station in Gan, Addu City. The President noted that investor confidence and large-scale economic opportunities can only be achieved when the country is viewed as safe and stable.
Citing examples from developed nations, including those in the Arab world, President Dr Muizzu said that military strength plays a crucial role in protecting national identity and supporting sustainable economic expansion rooted in Islamic unity.
He highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen the MNDF, including upgrading the Coast Guard fleet, enhancing the Marine Corps’ capabilities, and investing in the professional development of military personnel. He noted that next year’s state budget will include several new initiatives aimed at human resource development within the defence force.
The President also reaffirmed plans to acquire military aircraft for the MNDF Air Corps and to establish a comprehensive defence ecosystem capable of addressing emerging threats such as cyber warfare. A new training facility will also be developed at the recently inaugurated air station.
He expressed confidence that with continued investment in defence capacity, the Maldives could become a developed nation by 2040, with the MNDF serving as a cornerstone of national progress and resilience.
