The National Torch Run has commenced in support of the upcoming ban on tobacco product sales to individuals born after 2007. The 24-hour event began with a special ceremony held at the Ekuveni Running Track, inaugurated by Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim.

Minister Nazim handed the torch to table tennis player Fathimath Dheema Ali and national athlete Ahnaf Rayyan Fahmy, who began the symbolic run. The event saw participation from government officials, representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO), state-owned companies, sports clubs, and academies.

The torch run is open to the public, encouraging widespread participation. Alongside the run, a health clinic is providing information on wellness and healthy living, with additional activities such as a photo booth for participants.

The initiative highlights the government’s efforts to implement the amendment to the Tobacco Control Act, passed in May 2007, which prohibits the sale of tobacco products to individuals born on or after that year. The related regulations are expected to be gazetted soon, ensuring that age verification will be mandatory for all tobacco sales.
