Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has announced that the Shangri-La Resort in Addu City will reopen end of December.

The popular resort has been closed since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Its reopening marks a major boost for tourism in the southernmost atoll of the Maldives.

Minister Thoriq shared the news on X last night, posting a photo from a meeting with Chris Fong, Head of Investment and Asset Management of the Shangri-La Group, and Hav Dubosque, General Manager of Shangri-La Resort. He confirmed that preparations are well underway to welcome guests once again in time for the festive season.

The 284-bed luxury resort features a wide range of accommodation options, including 60 water villas, 26 beach villas, 28 pool villas, 16 treehouse villas, and two presidential villas.

Reopening Shangri-La Resort is one of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s key pledges to revitalise tourism and boost economic activity in Addu City. The return of the resort is expected to create new job opportunities and bring renewed attention to the region as a high-end tourist destination.
