President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the eleven development projects planned for Laamu Atoll Maavah will be completed in the near future.
During his visit to the island, which marked the first stop of his tour of Laamu Atoll, the President met with residents and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to addressing their concerns. Several projects have already commenced, while agreements for others have been signed.
The President highlighted that Maavah’s land use plan was prepared with input from the island’s community. He added that an additional 15 hectares of land will be reclaimed, bringing the total to 30 hectares. The newly reclaimed area will be utilised for housing and the construction of a modern football stadium, as allocated in the 2020 budget.
The President also noted that plans are underway to upgrade the Maavah Health Centre to hospital standards. An agreement to begin the development is expected to be signed this month. To improve emergency response services, a sea ambulance will be stationed on the island starting next year, as part of a broader effort to expand the national sea ambulance fleet.
Work has already begun on four main roads in Maavah, with additional roads to follow in the coming days. The Government will also support local youth by providing a sports fishing boat for the community.
In addition, the President stated that a second airport will be developed in Laamu Atoll to enhance transportation and tourism. The specific island selected for the project will be announced soon.
