Former President Mohamed Nasheed has expressed concern over the government’s decision to develop four additional airports in the north.
In a social media post, Nasheed noted that the proposed airports are all within a short speedboat distance of each other, ranging from 19 to 36 minutes. He argued that such close proximity could lead to economic inefficiency and place unnecessary financial strain on the national airline and local tourism sector.
His comments come after President Dr Mohamed Muizzu inaugurated the development of three new airports in Shaviyani Atoll — Bileiyfahi, Komandoo, and Milandhoo. The President also announced plans to begin construction of Alifushi Airport later this year. Komandoo and Alifushi are two neighbouring islands.
President Dr Muizzu had defended the initiative during his visit to Shaviyani Atoll, stating that additional airports are needed to attract investors and boost tourism in various regions of the country.
The government’s airport expansion plan has sparked debate over its financial sustainability and the long-term benefits for northern atolls.
