The Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee has been alerted to suspected corruption involving former Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed in connection with the procurement of body-worn cameras for the police service in 2022.
According to the committee, whistleblowers submitted information suggesting irregularities in the purchase process. The deal, valued at MVR 66 million, was reportedly awarded under a single-source procurement method after the cancellation of an initial bidding process.
Committee Chair and Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim noted that concerns were raised over the manner in which the contract was handled. He added that the former commissioner later joined the company that supplied the cameras after his retirement, raising questions about potential conflicts of interest.
The committee is reviewing the case to determine whether any ethical or legal violations occurred during the procurement process.
