President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has issued an amendment to the questions to be posed in the upcoming Addu City referendum, which seeks the views of residents on changing the city’s administrative structure.

The referendum aims to gather public opinion on whether Hulhudhoo, Meedhoo, and Feydhoo should each be established as separate island councils instead of remaining under the current Addu City Council.

According to the President’s Office, the amendment refines the questions that will be asked to residents of these three constituencies to ensure clarity and consistency. The decision follows discussions between the President and the Cabinet based on advice from the Attorney General’s Office.

The referendum will now include three separate questions, one for each constituency:

  • Should a separate council be established for Addu Hulhudhoo?
  • Should a separate council be established for Addu Meedho?
  • Should a separate council be established for Addu Feydhoo?

The Elections Commission has confirmed that the vote is scheduled to take place on 25 October 2025.
