President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has emphasised the importance of safeguarding the Maldives’ natural beauty and cultural traditions as the country expands its tourism industry.
The administration has launched several initiatives to broaden tourism across the nation, including efforts to develop areas where tourism has not yet been established. Among these projects is the planned reopening of Shangri-La Resort in Addu City, which has remained closed since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The government aims to reopen the resort by the end of this year.
In addition, the President has directed the launch of a new tourism project in Hankede, Addu City. To expedite development, the lease of Hankede to Maldives Fund Management Corporation (MFMC) has been lifted. The Tourism Ministry has confirmed that Hankede will be opened for development as an integrated tourism project through a bidding process, with the goal of bringing it into operation within the current presidential term.
Meanwhile, Dhonhera (LD1453) has been designated for bidding to establish halal tourism in Addu City.
