Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has ordered a thorough investigation into allegations of misappropriation of state funds, including high-profile corruption scandals linked to previous administrations.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the PGO highlighted ongoing probes into the Fenaka Corporation scandal during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration and the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) scandal during former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration.
According to the PGO, dedicated prosecution teams have been formed to support the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in pursuing these cases. The PGO said it has also instructed the Maldivian Police Service and ACC to conduct comprehensive investigations, identify criminal assets, and facilitate the recovery of funds for the state.
The statement confirmed that the PGO has terminated immunity agreements granted to four individuals in connection with the MMPRC case, including former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb. The ACC has been directed to share full details of the MMPRC investigation with the PGO by 8 November.
The PGO further noted that efforts are underway to expedite the investigation into the Fenaka scandal and that a directive has been issued to ensure all cases are completed within the stipulated deadlines.
The Office reiterated that both the Police and ACC are working closely to prosecute cases of state fund embezzlement, with a focus on recovering assets and holding those responsible to account.
