Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has requested to withdraw the appeal he filed with the Supreme Court regarding a case involving the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) and the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP).
The original case, filed by MTCC in the Civil Court, claimed that DRP owed MVR 1.1 million for services provided. MTCC sought to hold Maumoon, as the former leader of DRP, responsible for this debt. In June 2023, the Civil Court ruled that Maumoon could not be held responsible for the debt. MTCC appealed this decision to the High Court on June 8, 2024.
Maumoon's legal team filed a procedural objection in the High Court, arguing that he was not a party to the original case and should not be involved in the appeal. The High Court, however, decided that Maumoon should respond to certain points of the appeal and gave him 20 days to do so days to do so.
Maumoon then appealed this High Court decision to the Supreme Court. However, MTCC later withdrew their appeal from the High Court.
In today's Supreme Court hearing, Maumoon's lawyer, Mohamed Faisal, explained that they are requesting to withdraw the appeal because the original High Court case no longer exists, as MTCC has withdrawn it.
MTCC's lawyer, Hamza Latheef, agreed with the request to withdraw the appeal.
The presiding judge stated that the court will announce its decision on this matter, and the hearing was concluded.
