President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced changes to the housing scheme in across the atolls. Speaking to Th. Thimarafushi residents, he stated that the down payment for housing units, previously set at MVR 20,000, will be reduced to MVR 10,000. In addition, a three-month grace period will be introduced, starting once residents move into their homes.
The President added that utility work for the housing units in Thimarafushi has been handed over to Fenaka Corporation, with the aim of completing it by the end of the year. He noted that even if work is not fully finished, residents will be able to move in before Ramadan. He also revealed that an additional 100 housing units will be included in next year’s budget, benefiting both the general public and workers in the tourism sector.
President Dr Muizzu further highlighted several development projects planned for Thimarafushi. These include the construction of a 30-bed hospital, the upgrade of the health centre to Level 4 within four months, expansion of the island’s harbour, and the start of construction on a new Police Headquarters.
Other upcoming projects include a futsal stadium, renovation of the Youth Centre, a volleyball court, and road improvements. From November, passport and ID card services will also be available on the island. WAMCO has been handed responsibility for managing the island’s waste centre.
