President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has expressed support for reducing allowances and benefits received by former presidents and members of parliament.
The president’s remarks came as public calls on social media grew for a review of the perks granted to past leaders and lawmakers. He conveyed his stance in a message to a WhatsApp group of PNC lawmakers, noting that he favoured the reduction in line with the wishes of the people.
Under current regulations, a president who completes one term receives an honorarium of MVR 50,000, while a two-term president receives MVR 75,000. In addition, they are entitled to MVR 50,000 as housing allowance and MVR 175,000 for office expenses. Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom currently receives the highest level of benefits.
Former MPs are also entitled to allowances. Members who have reached the age of 55 and completed one term receive 30 per cent of their salary, while those who have served two terms are entitled to 45 per cent. They also receive health insurance coverage.
The president did not specify how the proposal to reduce allowances should be advanced, but his remarks indicate a willingness to support changes to the current system.
