Ferries travelling to the atolls will now be able to use Maldives Transport and Contracting Company’s (MTCC) ferry terminal in Henveiru.
The decision was made to resolve difficulties caused by the closure of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) area, which had been used by ferries before construction work began to widen the northern side of Boduthakurufaanu Magu in Malé. Under the new arrangement, ferries can dock at the Henveiru terminal 10 minutes before departure.
Road widening works on Boduthakurufaanu Road commenced on 21 August. The project contractor has already completed 72 metres of sheet piling for the quay wall capping demolition. The plan includes expanding the road into four lanes, constructing fencing along the 830-metre stretch from the Hulhumalé Ferry Terminal to the local market, building drainage systems, and installing road markings and signboards.
The Malé City Council awarded the project on 9 April at a cost of MVR 144.5 million, with a completion deadline of 455 days.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu earlier announced that a significant portion of the USD 130 million grant received from China will be allocated to this road construction project, which is among the largest infrastructure undertakings in the capital.
