Maldives Broadcasting Commission has announced that press passes for journalists in the broadcasting sector will only be issued after the completion of a training programme provided by the commission.
The decision is outlined in the commission’s new “procedure for accreditation of journalists” and will take effect six months after the policy is officially published.
According to the commission, the policy aims to improve the quality of media services, define the qualifications and experience required of journalists, and establish a registry of those working in the broadcasting sector.
Under the new rules, press passes will be issued to editors, journalists, presenters, writers, columnists, as well as photo and video journalists working for television and radio outlets.
Applicants must hold at least an MQA Level 3 qualification or have a minimum of three years’ experience in journalism, broadcasting, communication, or related fields. In addition, applicants must not have been convicted of a criminal offence within the past five years.
