Maldives Police Service has sought a legal opinion from Prosecutor General's Office regarding remarks made by Inguraidhoo MP and PNC leader Ibrahim Falah during a recent parliamentary session.
The issue arose after the Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) lodged a complaint with the authorities over Falah’s comments made during the debate on the Media Control Bill. Police confirmed that the request for a legal opinion was submitted yesterday.
During the debate, Falah accused the media of spreading false rumours about him and suggested that journalists should not be jailed but “impaled”. His remarks have since drawn heavy criticism.
The MJA expressed deep concern, stating that Falah’s comments encouraged violence against journalists and media workers. The association said such statements undermine social peace, spread fear among journalists, and go against Islamic principles that prohibit persecution.
The association also warned that inflammatory remarks from individuals in positions of power could endanger media freedom and escalate tensions within society.
