Several journalists walked out of a press conference organised by the President’s Office today in protest over the government’s stance on the Media Regulation Bill currently being reviewed in Parliament.

The bill, introduced by Thulhaadhoo MP Abdul Hannan Abubakar, was adopted during an out-of-session sitting and is now at the committee stage. Since its introduction last week, journalists have raised strong objections, calling for its withdrawal. Demonstrations have been held outside Parliament, the President’s Office, and Muliaage.

The Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) earlier requested a meeting with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to convey concerns over the bill, which was subsequently held.

During today’s press conference, Attorney General Ahmed Usham reiterated the government’s position that the bill should not be withdrawn, though amendments would be made. His remarks drew frustration from journalists, who felt their questions were not being adequately addressed. Tensions escalated, leading to a heated exchange between Usham and a journalist, after which a significant number of reporters boycotted the briefing.

Usham maintained that the Attorney General’s Office is still examining the bill. He also noted that a draft submitted by the Maldives Media Council in 2022 had contained stricter provisions compared to the current version.

Despite growing protests, the government has indicated it intends to revise the bill rather than remove it from Parliament.
