The Media Commission Bill has been listed on the agenda for tomorrow’s extraordinary parliament sitting, with debate on the legislation set to continue.
The bill was first taken up last week during the final sitting of the second session. Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla had then adjourned proceedings to allow members more time to review the proposed Media Regulation Bill.
Introduced by Independent MP Abdul Hannan Abubakar, the bill has drawn mixed reactions. Members of the PNC have defended the proposal, while MDP members have called for its withdrawal.
The bill proposes the formation of a seven-member Media Commission, with three members appointed by the President and four elected by the media. The President would appoint the Chairperson, while the Vice-Chairperson would be chosen through a vote among commission members.
It also outlines fines for code of conduct violations: between MVR 5,000 and MVR 100,000 for newspapers, and between MVR 5,000 and MVR 25,000 for individual journalists in cases of repeated breaches. Parliament would also retain the authority to remove members elected by the media.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, speaking during his visit to Nolhivaranfaru, commented on the bill, saying he has asked for revisions to ensure the President does not hold control over the commission. He stressed that he does not wish to exercise control over the media.
