President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that land previously set aside for the development of a jail has been returned to the Neykurendhoo Island Council for community-led economic use. He said the Administration would support the Council’s plans and citizen-driven initiatives for the site.

The President made the announcement while visiting Neykurendhoo as part of his tour of South Thiladhunmathi Atoll. During the visit, an agreement was also signed to develop the island’s swimming track. The project will proceed alongside harbour development works, which include extending the harbour by 100 feet, adding a boat docking area, and creating beach facilities. He further assured that shore protection measures would be funded in next year’s budget.

On education, the President pledged to complete the long-delayed school project, confirming that classrooms will be ready for use by the next academic year. He also announced funding for a multi-purpose hall in next year’s budget, with construction set to begin early in the year.

Further initiatives were outlined in the health and wellness sectors, including the extension of the health centre, the establishment of a fitness and recreation centre, construction of an indoor badminton court, and additional resources for the island’s football grounds.
