President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that a new coastal protection project will be undertaken in Nellaidhoo to tackle the island’s erosion challenges. Speaking to residents during his visit, he confirmed that while part of the work has already been completed, the next phase will be included in next year’s budget.

The President also outlined several development initiatives currently underway. These include the expansion of the health centre, with plans to make it a 24-hour facility equipped with laboratory services and additional staff.

To address housing needs, 60 housing units will be built by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), while the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded a project to develop a new jetty. He also noted that 99 per cent of the water and sewerage project is complete.

During the visit, the President laid the foundation stone for a new mosque with space for 500 worshippers, featuring a library, classrooms, solar power, and air-conditioning.

President Dr Muizzu also pledged new facilities for Nellaidhoo School, including a multipurpose hall, classrooms, and a staff room. For sports, a futsal ground and handball court will be developed next year, with work beginning in January.

The President also inaugurated a new Bank of Maldives ATM, which will make banking services more accessible and reduce the need for residents to travel to other islands.

He concluded by urging the island council to create plans to make better use of Hirinaidhoo, now part of Nellaidhoo, to generate economic opportunities for the community.
