The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has officially taken over responsibility for building housing units for residents of HDh. Hirimaradhoo who are relocating to Hanimaadhoo.

The agreement was signed during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to Hirimaradhoo as part of his tour of 13 islands in Haa Dhaalu Atoll. Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib signed on behalf of the Ministry, while HDC Managing Director Ali Zuhair signed on behalf of the corporation.

The government first announced on 1 February this year that Hirimaradhoo residents would be relocated to Hanimaadhoo, following a request from the island community. At the time, the President’s Office confirmed the decision but did not provide further details.

Speaking to residents, President Dr Muizzu said the Hirimaradhoo Council had reported 154 registered plots on the island. He assured that housing units would be built in Hanimaadhoo and handed over to the community.

According to the Hirimaradhoo Council, 589 people are registered as residents, with about 300 currently living on the island. Council member Ahmed Shareef previously said that most residents wished to move to an area with better access to services, noting that while some had expressed interest in relocating to Malé Atoll, Dhidhdhoo, or Hanimaadhoo, their main demand was to be provided with a plot or housing wherever they settled.
