President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has confirmed that permanent housing will be provided for all residents of HDh. Hirimaradhoo relocating to HDh. Hanimaadhoo, with construction expected to be completed within 18 months.

Speaking to the people of Hirimaradhoo during his ongoing tour of South Thiladhunmathi Atoll, the President said that a housing scheme will be implemented on land allocated for the island’s residents in Hanimaadhoo. He added that municipal infrastructure will also be developed, following an agreement signed today between the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure and the Housing Development Corporation Limited.

The President assured that every Hirimaradhoo resident will be granted housing under the relocation scheme. He also noted that individuals who owned land in Hirimaradhoo but were unable to build on it will be given the option of housing or financial compensation in Hanimaadhoo. He further stated that compensation amounts under the population consolidation programme will be reviewed and increased.

President Dr Muizzu stressed that the Government’s approach to centralisation is citizen-focused and entirely voluntary, adding that two to three other islands have already expressed interest in similar arrangements. He said that economic activities on vacated islands would also be taken into account, with proceeds allocated to the original residents.

The relocation of Hirimaradhoo’s population to Hanimaadhoo is expected to take around 18 months. The President said development projects would continue on Hirimaradhoo until the process is complete, with the Government supporting all initiatives that benefit the community during this time.
