As part of the ongoing road widening and development project in Malé City, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced that two harbour areas have been designated for ferries previously using the north side.

In a notification issued on Monday, MPL stated that ferries will now be able to use North Harbour and Southwest Harbour for a temporary period of three months, from 20 November 2020 to 19 February 2021, until repair works on the north side are completed. After the repair period, services will resume at the regular locations in line with harbour procedures.

For further assistance, ferry operators and the public may contact MPL’s Operations Office at 3006545 or T-Jetty Operations at 3039644.

The road development project is being carried out by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). The company was awarded the contract on 9 April for a total of MVR 144.5 million, with a deadline of 455 days.

Key works under the project include:

  • Widening the northern road into a four-lane road
  • Fencing an 830-metre stretch from the Hulhumalé Ferry Terminal to the Local Market
  • Construction of pavements and drainage systems
  • Road marking and installation of signboards

The project is part of the government’s broader pledge to modernise roads in Malé and Villimalé, improve traffic flow, and address congestion issues. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has highlighted road development as a key priority, noting that a large share of the USD 130 million grant from China will be utilised for the Malé City road project.
