Work has officially begun on the road widening project on the northern side of Bodu Thakurufaanu Magu in Malé City.
The project was inaugurated today at a special ceremony by Minister of Construction Dr Abdulla Muththalib. Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen and Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) Managing Director Ahmed Saeed attended the event.
The Ministry of Construction awarded the project to MTCC on 9 April 2025, with a contract value of MVR 144.5 million. The project is scheduled to be completed within 455 days.
Key works under the project include:
- Widening the northern side of the road to create a four-lane route
- Fencing an 830-metre stretch (from Hulhumalé Ferry Terminal to the Local Market)
- Constructing pavements
- Installing a drainage system
- Road marking and signage installation
The initiative aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s electoral pledge to modernise Malé’s roads and ease traffic congestion. The project also forms part of the government’s efforts to upgrade deteriorating roads in Malé and Vilimalé.
Following his first official visit to China after assuming office, President Dr Muizzu announced that a significant portion of the USD 130 million grant provided by China would be allocated to road development projects in the capital.
