Scheduled seaplane operations are set to begin in Thoddoo from February next year, easing transport challenges for both residents and tourism workers. A dedicated seaplane platform will be established on the island to facilitate the service, which is expected to provide safer and more reliable travel, especially during rough seas.
The announcement was made during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to Thoddoo, where he outlined several development projects aimed at strengthening the island’s economy. He highlighted Thoddoo’s strong position in both agriculture and tourism, with around 80 tourism businesses currently operating on the island, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting its growth.
Work has also commenced on a 30-bed health facility for Thoddoo, with funding already released. Based on expert recommendations, the project will be upgraded to a hospital, with space for operating theatres and intensive care units.
In addition, the government plans to establish the Faculty of Food and Sciences under the National University in Thoddoo, recognising the island’s role as a hub for agriculture. The new faculty will provide educational opportunities in the field while generating wider economic benefits.
Preparations have also been completed for a road construction project on the island, which will be implemented in consultation with the local community.
