For the first time in the Maldives, the state has introduced a policy to provide financial assistance to registered private media outlets.
The President’s Office announced that the policy, published today in the Government Gazette, is part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to allocate a portion of the state budget to support the press and strengthen the role of the media.
The new rules lay out standards and procedures for private media outlets to apply for state funding. According to the President’s Office, 0.1 per cent of the annual state budget will be allocated for this purpose, starting this year. The allocation will not depend on new revenue-generating activities but will be included in the state budget each year.
President Dr Muizzu had earlier assured media representatives that his administration would consult with them on addressing challenges faced by the industry. On the night of his election victory, he pledged to introduce a transparent and accountable mechanism for funding private media.
The President’s Office stated that this policy will, for the first time, establish a clear and transparent process for private media outlets to access financial assistance from the state budget.
