The Government has announced plans to take over Baa Dharavandhoo Airport and hand it to Island Aviation for development and operation.
Developed in 2012 and initially handed to Coastline Hotels and Resorts, the primary investor, the airport’s operations were later transferred to Island Aviation, though without authority to carry out development works.
Speaking at a public meeting in Dharavandhoo this evening, as part of his tour of Baa Atoll, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu noted that little progress had been made at the airport in recent years. He said the Government would invest in upgrading the facility, working with the current investor to ensure the transition complies with legal and regulatory requirements.
He added that Island Aviation will develop and operate Dharavandhoo airport as per Government and public expectations.
He expressed confidence that discussions with the investor could be concluded soon, enabling Island Aviation, which he described as ready for the task, to begin the development process.
The move follows longstanding complaints about the poor condition and inadequate services at Dharavandhoo Airport, a key gateway for tourists visiting the atoll. Island Aviation has previously voiced concerns over the lack of investment in the facility.
