The Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Gender has opened a complaint process regarding two nominees proposed by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu for appointment to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
The terms of two current HRCM members will expire on 8 August, prompting the President to submit the names of Mohamed Faris Thoha and Mohamed Shafiq Mahmood to Parliament for approval. The nominees’ applications were referred to the committee for review yesterday.
At a meeting held today, the committee decided to invite grievances concerning the nominees from members of the public, with submissions accepted in writing via email or at Parliament until 15 August. The committee will interview both nominees on 16 August and aims to complete its review and submit a report to the full Parliament by 17 August.
A vote will then be taken to determine whether the two candidates will receive parliamentary approval.
The current members of the HRCM are President Mariyam Muna, Vice President Moomina Waheed, Samau Ahmed Najeeb, Aminath Shifat Abdul Razzaq, and Ismail Habib Abdul Raheem.
