North Harbour in Malé City has been expanded, and new regulations have been introduced requiring all vessels to be registered, with docking fees set to be imposed.

The changes follow a decision in June by the Ministry of Transport to transfer full management of the harbour to Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), removing the Malé City Council from its previous role. The North Harbour, located near the Malé Fish Market and the local market area, now falls entirely under MPL’s control.

According to MPL, the expansion increases the harbour’s capacity from 32 to 54 vessels, with dedicated space for 20 fishing boats. This brings the total capacity of the port to 74 vessels. In addition, a waiting area has been created to accommodate up to 25 vessels seeking space at the port.

MPL stated that only vessels registered at North Harbour have been allowed to operate from there since August 1. From September 1, a fee will also be charged for vessels docked at the harbour.
