President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has described the relationship between the Maldives and Sri Lanka as more than just a diplomatic partnership, calling it a long-standing and trusted connection rooted in shared history and mutual respect.
Speaking at a state banquet held in honour of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who is on a two-day official visit to the Maldives, President Dr Muizzu expressed hope that the visit would mark a historic step forward in strengthening ties.
He described Sri Lanka as a "second home" for many Maldivians, highlighting the warmth and hospitality consistently extended by the Sri Lankan people. President Dr Muizzu noted that cooperation between the two countries has grown in key areas such as health, education, and human resource development, with collaboration expanding into other fields as well.
President Dissanayake arrived in the Maldives on Monday and received a ceremonial welcome. Official talks between the two delegations were held at the President’s Office.
Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Sri Lanka were established on 26 July 1965, the same day the Maldives gained independence. This year marks 60 years of close and friendly ties between the two countries.
