President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Maldives’ Ambassador to Japan and former cabinet minister Hassan Sobir, calling it a profound loss to the nation.
In a message posted on X, President Dr Muizzu said Sobir’s death was a great shock, particularly coming just a day after he was honoured with the Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin during the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations. The President praised Sobir’s exceptional contributions to the Maldives’ development, especially in the areas of fisheries, agriculture, tourism, and foreign affairs.
He served longest as Minister of Tourism and worked tirelessly as a diplomat to strengthen the Maldives’ international relations, the President noted.
Hassan Sobir passed away this morning, 28 July 2025, at Tree Top Hospital while receiving treatment for cancer. He had dedicated over five decades to public service and held numerous senior roles across government and diplomacy.
Sobir began his career on 7 February 1973 at the National Planning Agency and later served in the Ministry of Planning and Development. On 11 November 1993, he was appointed Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture under President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and was later appointed Minister of Tourism, where he played a key role in shaping the country's tourism industry.
In the latter part of his career, Sobir served in multiple ambassadorial roles, representing the Maldives in the United Kingdom, Singapore, the European Union, and Japan—where he remained in post until his passing.
His legacy is marked by visionary leadership, tireless service, and a lifelong commitment to the progress of the Maldives.
