M.C.G.H Opticals, a new optician service under the Malé City Group of Hospitals, has been launched to offer affordable and accessible eyecare to the Maldivian public.
The facility was officially opened by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at a special ceremony held at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) today. During the event, the President also handed over prescription glasses to the first three beneficiaries.
This initiative follows President Muizzu’s 31 May 2025 pledge to address high prices in the private optical sector by establishing a government-run alternative. As part of this effort, the Aasandha subsidy for prescription glasses was increased from MVR 1,000 to MVR 2,000 every two years.
Set up within just two months, M.C.G.H Opticals offers services such as vision testing, diagnosis of certain eye conditions, and dispensing of prescription glasses. The aim is to reduce dependence on private providers and improve public access to essential eyecare.
Speaking at the event, Ibrahim Abdurrazzaq Haleem, CEO of Malé City Group of Hospitals, said a similar service will open in Hulhumalé in August, with plans to expand to five regional hospitals across the country.
