The new terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) has been officially inaugurated.

The inauguration ceremony, led by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, was attended by former presidents, senior government officials, and dignitaries. The event featured the country’s largest drone display and a traditional havan ritual.

The newly built three-storey terminal is designed to offer streamlined, modern services to travellers. It houses 48 check-in counters, including self-service options, and has the capacity to handle 12 boats simultaneously. Six baggage conveyor belts have been installed, and arrangements have been made for direct access from boats to the terminal.

Operations will begin in phases, based on guidance from international consultants Orat and Modalis of Canada. Smaller airlines that require fewer resources are expected to shift operations in July and August, with other airlines following in September.

The national carrier will be the first to begin using the facility. With the capacity to serve 7.5 million passengers annually, the new terminal is expected to attract more international airlines, boost tourism, and significantly contribute to economic growth.

Built at a cost of nearly MVR 7 billion, the terminal is regarded as the most transformative upgrade to the airport in over 50 years—ushering in lasting benefits for future generations.
