President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has characterised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the Maldives as a significant step forward in strengthening bilateral relations.

The President noted that the visit yielded substantial outcomes, including the signing of four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and three key agreements across various sectors. Both sides also agreed to initiate talks on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), signalling a deeper economic partnership.

Among the highlights of the visit was the joint launch of major development projects supported by India, along with the issuance of a commemorative stamp marking 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

President Dr Muizzu expressed his appreciation for the visit, particularly its timing as part of the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations. He also acknowledged the continued support from India in the country’s development journey.

Prime Minister Modi, who concluded his two-day visit, conveyed his gratitude for the warm hospitality received and expressed optimism about the momentum generated in bilateral cooperation following his discussions with the Maldivian leadership.
