Former national footballer and ex-FAM President Ahmed Thoriq, widely known as Tom, has been elected unopposed as the new President of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) at an extraordinary congress held today in Meeruma.
Thoriq, who previously served briefly as FAM President in 2016, returned to the post with the unanimous support of all affiliated clubs. No other candidates contested the election, allowing Thoriq and his proposed executive committee to assume office without opposition.
New FAM Executive Committee:
- President: Ahmed Thoriq
- Senior Vice President: Ali Ibrahim (New Radiant)
- Vice Presidents: Hussain Shafiu (Maziya), Mujtaba Jaleel (New Radiant)
- Members: Imran Mohammad (Inma), Mohammad Umair, Ahmed Abbas (TC), Ali Rizwan (BG)
- Female Members: Hawa Nasra Sayed (MP), Hawa Rashida Abdullah Nasih (Audi)
The elections followed recent amendments to FAM’s statutes, approved unanimously at a general body meeting on 27 June. These amendments were proposed by the Normalisation Committee appointed by FIFA to bring the association’s governance in line with international standards and national regulations.
Key Amendments Include:
- Granting membership to all clubs in the First and Second Divisions
- Mandating the establishment and recognition of regional associations as per the updated Sports Act
- Empowering the governing body to organise regional tournaments
- Requiring a women's football tournament framework to be presented to Congress within one year
Thoriq campaigned with a commitment to broaden football development to the atolls and to revitalise the structure and integrity of Maldivian football. His election comes at a critical time for FAM, which is currently under criminal investigation over financial irregularities.
Despite prior election delays and controversies, FIFA facilitated a normalisation process, resulting in today’s elections and structural reforms. The new membership now comprises 23 general members, including 10 First Division and 13 Second Division clubs.
Thoriq’s return signals a new chapter for Maldivian football governance, with expectations for transparency, inclusivity, and renewed development across all levels of the sport.
