Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently on an official visit to the Maldives at the invitation of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu for Independence Day celebrations, met with Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla on Saturday.
The meeting was held at Kurumba Maldives Resort, where the Prime Minister is staying. Discussions centred on strengthening bilateral relations, with Prime Minister Modi welcoming the formation of the India–Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Group under the 20th Parliament, chaired by Speaker Abdul Raheem, as a constructive step forward.
During his visit, India and the Maldives signed eight key agreements following official talks between President Dr Muizzu and Prime Minister Modi, covering a range of development and cooperation areas. India also donated two portable hospitals to bolster the Maldives’ healthcare capacity.
Prime Minister Modi took part in the virtual inauguration of several Indian-funded development projects in Addu City and attended the opening ceremony of the Maldives Ministry of Defence’s new headquarters, Dhoshimeyna Building.
As part of the visit, India also eased repayment terms on an existing Line of Credit (LoC) extended to the Maldives, reinforcing the deepening economic and development partnership between the two countries.
