The Government of Maldives has officially received 4,000 housing units built under Indian loan assistance, marking a key milestone in the country’s social housing programme. The handover ceremony was held this evening at the President’s Office as part of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ongoing visit to the Maldives.

Prime Minister Modi formally handed over the completed flats to the Maldivian government on behalf of India. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu accepted the housing units on behalf of the Maldives.

The project, launched during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration, was funded through a USD227 million loan from the Export-Import Bank of India. The construction was jointly undertaken by two Indian firms — the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) and Kalpataru Projects International Limited (KPIL), each responsible for 2,000 flats.
