India and the Maldives have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to begin talks on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), as part of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ongoing visit to the Maldives.
The signing took place at a ceremony held at the President’s Office in Malé. Eight agreements were signed in total, including the FTA MoU. Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed signed the agreement for the Maldives, while India’s External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar signed on behalf of India.
The idea to start FTA talks was first agreed during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to India in October 2024. At the time, both sides said the agreement would strengthen ties and support economic growth.
Prime Minister Modi said India will continue to support the Maldives’ development and is ready to work together on climate change, disaster response, and renewable energy. He also noted that India aims to be the first to offer help during emergencies in the region.
The FTA talks are expected to boost trade, investment, and cooperation between the two countries.
