Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that the Maldives was saved from bankruptcy and economic crisis due to India's support.

In an interview with India's ANI, in the context of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming visit to the Maldives on July 25 for the country's Independence Day, Nasheed praised the generous aid that India has been providing to the Maldives.

“India's timely assistance in every matter has helped stabilise the economy without going into default. This shows not only India's focus on maintaining regional ties, but also the strength of trade ties between the two countries,” Nasheed said.

Nasheed stated that the economic relationship between the Maldives and India is even more significant than financial aid, and this strengthens the ties between the two countries. He also spoke about the Maldives' foreign policy.

Nasheed further stated that the Maldives’ foreign policy has consistently followed an 'India First' approach. In an interview with news agency ANI, Nasheed acknowledged that while the country’s policies have occasionally leaned toward China due to electoral politics, that is no longer the case.

He further highlighted that the overall political consensus in the Maldives is now firmly aligned with India.
